Rotte Tree 2004-18 DVD, Color, Silent, 177-second loop, 2004 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
I recorded a performance in which the animation of a growing tree was projected on me. I tried to reveal humanity
in my simplified and purified body language. I disguised myself for the role of a tree which wishes to grow towards and
reach out to the heavens. The growing tree is a metaphor for a dreaming human being.
The title "Rotte Tree" was borrowed from Lote-tree in Indian myth, written in the novel "The Satanic Verses" by
Salman Rushdie. It states that there were Lote Trees in the boundary of heaven and the earth. I imagined what they
would look like if they were in the area between sacredness and the mundane world. The thought that they may have
attributes of two contrary worlds was quite interesting, so I have a concentration in the concept representing both
transcendence and human desire. The tree that wishes to grow to heaven, even if its roots are in the earth, is like a
human being who changes and makes an effort toward a better state in the realities in life.
